AASL Conf. Thursday

AASL Handouts shared online.

Conference blog.

I have the privilege of attending the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Conference, October 25-28, 2007, at Reno, Nevada.

My trip here was mostly uneventful. I finished a book Wednesday night so I could start a new one on this trip. I got to read a lot. My flight was long. I had to travel from Houston to San Francisco in order to get to Reno, Nevada. Flying into San Francisco, I could see some fires in the mountains and the smoke covering too much territory. I do hope the fireman and the weather help get the fires under control soon.

Traveling from the airport to the hotel in the shuttle almost everyone was attending the conference. I set next to a teacher who now teaches teachers how to teach students to write. He is at this conference for Random House because he also writes children’s books. I did not catch his name. He is from
Pennsylvania.

After settling in to my 21st floor hotel room (Circus, Circus), I have registered and started looking at the Exploratorium poster presentations. So, far I have talked to folks from Aldine, ISD, Pasadena ISD, Houston ISD, Austin ISD, UHCL, UT SOI, Joyce Valenza, and Keith Curry Lance. I asked Joyce about her blog not showing completely in Google Reader and she said I was the 5th one to bring that up to her today. She said she was not responsible and that I should talk to Brian at School Library Journal. Keith called me across the room and we talked about his projects. He presented yesterday with David Loertscher at the Treasure Mountain Research Institute (not associated with but held before all AASL conference to look at the research connected with School Libraries). I asked about the results of the
Indiana study. He said that when principals see the Librarian as a leader the test scores go up. When teachers see the Librarian as a teacher the test scores go up.

I am waiting to get into the opening session with Daniel Pink. I am looking forward to the learning and the discussion.
